Dongyun Guzheng was founded by Master Zai Zhirong, the founder of the Scarlet Bird Zhuque Factory. His dream of developing the "perfect guzheng" did not stop at his retirement from the Scarlet Bird Factory, leading to the creation of the "Dongyun".
In the Dongyun guzheng, Master Zai made several major improvements from the Scarlet Bird to address its common weaknesses. First, he widened the shape of the sound grooves to minimize the blooming bass effect while retaining the deep and warm bass. He also added a tone bar underneath the soundboard to make the high notes rounder and brighter.
He designed new sound holes on the backboard to produce a more balanced and even sound. The interior construction was also modified to keep the middle range clean and solid.
Additionally, Master Zai maintained the traditional method of carving out the sound body. The body board, made from paulownia (pao-tong) wood naturally grown in Henan Province, is artificially hollowed out in the middle, greatly improving the sound quality of the instrument. This process requires almost the entire tree to make a single guzheng.
This model is custom-made for Sound of China. All the bridges and strings are fine-tuned and adjusted to ensure the best sound quality.
